nope, you can't do this unless you are both a part of the same xbox live gold family subscription. and that's kind of complicated unless you actually live in the same house.

Why do i keep getting kicked off of halo 3 games on xbox live?
all of my other games work on live but when i play a game in halo 3 the game stops and says selecting new host and then i get kicked off back to the matchmaking lobby. this happens every time and i cant even finish one game. what am i supposed to do about it?Why do i keep getting kicked off of halo 3 games on xbox live?

It could mean that people are lagging, the host kicks you off, or you may have a bad connection. Try talking to the x-box customer service. The number should say on the box from your 360 or from the 360's Manuel.
Or, you could make your own map or game on halo 3, invite your friends to play and see if it works from there.

If I have some family settings on, can I still download m-rated video games from xbox live?

Why cant i invite friends to games on xbox live yet they can invite me?
Whenever i try the option is greyed out so i cant even click invite to game. Why is this yet they can invite me to games but i cant? Does anyone know how to fix this.

It sounds like you have a Silver account (the one that comes free with the XBox); this account only lets you go to XBox Live and download some games, vids, etc. It does not allow you to play any games with your friends.
