Do you have to have friends to play games on Xbox Live?

I'm thinking of getting Gold soon. And I was wondering if it's mandatory to have Xbox Live friends to play games against someone/in a campaign on a game such as Left 4 Dead 2?Do you have to have friends to play games on Xbox Live?
Most, if not all, games that allow you to play on Xbox Live have a matchmaking system that puts you into games with strangers. I find this works best in versus/deathmatch situations; playing campaigns with strangers can be a bit more hit and miss. If you get a good group it's fine, but some people just run off on their own or do other stupid things.
Nope, most games have public and private lobbies, you can end up making friends with people that play the same sort of games as you once you get live.Do you have to have friends to play games on Xbox Live?
nope you can play with your friends but you just search for people on line and play with them and talk to them but it might not be as fun then as playing with your friends
Nope. You acquire friends by playing online. Just play fair and don't trash talk and you'll get the right kind of people on your list.

pax.Do you have to have friends to play games on Xbox Live?
not on most servers
no, the players are automatically put in a lobby for you to play with.
No you will be in a random game with random people playing by themselves. Left For Dead 2 or any left for dead games is a good way to meet friends also because there is only four of you talking to each other and your play a game with them for a long time and usually even more than one game..
