Do you have to be a gold member to play games online on xbox live?

Hi I was wondering if you have to be a gold member to play game on xbox live because I just got Modern Warfare 2 and when I tried to connect to online mode it displayed a message saying that you do not have the right account to play online.Do you have to be a gold member to play games online on xbox live?
Yes. A gold account is required for online play.
yea you do its 50 a year like everyone said and silver just lets you send messages etc. but if you bought a new xbox you can get 2 free 1 month subscriptions but you have to create a new name each time also i know xbox was allowing people to play on weekends with silver accounts although it may just depend on the game i'm really not sure hahaDo you have to be a gold member to play games online on xbox live?

Or if you dont want to use your credit card, go to any gaming store and buy an Xbox Live card there.

To play on xbox live you must but a membership card, for periods from 1 month, 3 months or a year. A year is about $50 thats what i have, once it runs out you go to silver where you cant play online or go into parties. only private chats.Do you have to be a gold member to play games online on xbox live?
