You can play games without it but the LIVE requires a pass. They come in 3months and 12 months i think. Thats why im on PS3. I had XB-360 for a while but sold it.Do you need xbox live to play games?

Yes, you can play games even without Xbox Live, but to play multi-player with other people in you're game, you'll need Xbox Live (25$/3mon,60$/yr.)
